SPIRITUAL GIFTS
“Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant,” Paul wrote to the church in Corinth. He wanted them to know the truth about the Spirit’s empowerment of believers for kingdom work. Throughout his writings (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Timothy 2), Paul would remind Christians that spiritual gifts are given by God “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Eph 4:12-13).
Peter and Paul both wrote lists of spiritual gifts (1 Peter 4). These lists were not exhaustive, but symbolized the diverse spiritual talents the Holy Spirit can give to each believer. They would emphasis that It is the responsibility of every baptized believer to discover and use their spiritual gifts.
