"Bringing People In! Lifting People Up! Sending People Out!"

Intercessory Prayer Workshop

June 26th, 2010

The Rev. Dr. Carla Waterman, Affiliate Professor of Spiritual Formation at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, will lead an prayer workshop, “Intercessory Encounters with Jesus,” at Central Baptist Church on Friday and Saturday, August 13 and 14, 2010 .  Dr. Waterman will train persons of faith in practical ways to pray for and with people.  Learning to pray is a life-long adventure, and one of its central themes is learning to pray for the needs of others.  In this workshop we will explore five foundations of intercessory prayer as they arise out of actual encounters with Jesus on behalf of others in the Gospels:

  1. “If you can do something”: Struggles of faith in prayer
  2. “Only speak the word”: Praying from a distance
  3. “They have no more wine”: Perceptive and persistent prayer
  4. “People who look like trees” Wrestling with prayer’s outcomes
  5. “And when he saw their faith” Becoming prayer’s instrument and recipient

This workshop will be open to the public.  Cost is $25.00 per person (no cost to members of Central Baptist Church of Quincy, Illinois).   Carla A. Waterman has been teaching at the intersection of Trinitarian theology, corporate worship and everyday life since 1995.  She first came to Northern Semianry in 2000 to teach in the Worship and Spirituality Program established by the late Robert E. Webber.  Dr. Waterman is currently Affiliate Professor of Spiritual Formation. Dr. Waterman is the author of Songs of Assent (www.watermanuscripts.com), and President of In the Kingdom Ministries, Inc., a spiritual retreat and mentoring ministry in the United States and abroad.  She is also active in the ancient-future worship world, and is on the faculty of the Robert E. Webber Institute of Worship Studies.
